On the Re Dedication of St.Mel’s Cathedral Longford 17th May 2015 by Mary Melvin Geoghegan

Waiting in the choir –
as the Cathedral begins to fill.
Watching, how the foundation stone
over a century and seventy five years ago
is taken from the historic ruins out in Ardagh.
Now, standing long side forty thousand others
in a wet field, the first sod is cut.
Today it’s under a silver tabernacle
above all polished marble
on this new Ascension Day
as future generations descend.
Remembering its beginning in 1840
the Famine of 1847, 1916, a Civil War
Independence and the Fire of 2009.
How it was restored and music
charmed the angels back to the ceiling.
